Job Horton [h.1.4.8.4]

Job Horton was the fourth child of John Horton & Emma Hartill born November 23rd, 1876 at Cotwallend, Sedgley, Staffs.

In 1881 Job, his parents & brother & sister were living at 6 Gordon’s Place, Cotwallend, Sedgley. They were living with his maternal grandmother Ann & her second husband Joseph Hickman.

The family were still at the same address in 1891 & Job was working as an apprentice carpenter.

Job married Ellen Pearce in July-September 1899 at All Saints, Sedgley. Ellen was born Oct-December 1876, the daughter of Hannah & John Pearce, an iron moulder.

In 1901 Job & Ellen were living at Gate St, Woodsetton Village, Sedgley where Job was a carpenter & joiner. They had a daughter Virginia, aged 1 year & also with them at the time of the census was 14 year old niece Hannah Jones.

By 1911 Job had become a builder & contractor & he & Ellen were living at 37 Kings Rd, Sedgeley. They now had 4 children at home – Virginia, at school, Ellen Lavinia (9), John (8) & Edna Isabel (2).

Ellen sadly died in July-September 1922 at Sedgley & was buried at All Saints, Gospel End.

h.1.4.8.4.3 John Horton born March 26th, 1903 at Sedgley; died Oct-December 1974 in Dudley

h.1.4.8.4.4 Edna Isabel Horton born December 28th, 1908 at Sedgley; died 2011 at Sedgley, Staffs

h.1.4.8.4.5  Phyllis Mary Horton born July-September 1914 at Sedgley

Widowed Job remarried in April-June 1927.  His second wife was Ethel Guest.  Ethel was born August 12th, 1884 in Sedgley, the daughter of Clara May & Thomas A Guest, a printer letterpress.

Also in 1927 daughter Ellen Lavinia married William Henry Stanley Cox in Sedgley.  In 1939 they & their family were living in Coseley & William was an iron & steel worker.

Son John married Elsie M Smith in 1930 in Dudley.  In 1939 they & their family were living in Coseley where John was a carpenter coffin maker.

There is a marriage for Phyllis Mary to George Wright Burgess, a draughtsman, in 1939 in Sedgley.  At the time of the 1939 register they were living in Tipton, Staffs.

The 1939 register shows Job & Ethel living at Westholme, Tipton Rd, Sedgley.  Job was still a builder & with them was Job’s daughter Edna Isabel, a comptometer operator. Also with them was Ethel’s younger sister, Hilda Guest, a domestic.

Job died on May 27th, 1950, aged 74 at Tipton Rd, Sedgley, Staffs. Probate was granted to son John Horton, building contractor, & William Stanley Cox, foreman moulder.  His effects were £5346.9s.5d.

Ethel of 17 Tipton Rd died September 22nd, 1952 at Burton Rd Hospital, Dudley, Staffs.
